Befriending

Loneliness can be twice as unhealthy as obesity, according to researchers who found that feelings of isolation can have a devastating impact on older people.

The scientists tracked more than 2,000 people aged 50 and over and found that the loneliest were nearly twice as likely to die during the six-year study than the least lonely. (Guardian, 16 February 2014)

If you are feeling lonely or don't have family and friends close by we will match you with one of our befriending volunteers.

When we match you with a volunteer we will consider your interests, your likes and dislikes and whether your personalities complement each other.

Our volunteers choose the hours they want to work and you choose how you want the relationship to develop so there's no pressure for either of you.

Our volunteers can visit you or talk to you regularly by phone - it's up to you. They will pass the time of day, share a friendly chat or listen to your concerns.
